The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) raised signal no. 4 over parts of Cagayan as typhoon "Mina" or Nanmandol (Int'l name) intensified and moves closer to North Luzon.

Shedding Light on Cyclothymia

Prognosis.  I remember reading a psychological journal few years back that some cases of bipolar disorder often misdiagnose as major depression.  I have been expose to the case of bipolar disorder and personally caring for a love one suffering from bipolar disorder.  So I thought I was quite aware of Bipolar and Major Depression.
          Since I was a teenager I have experience recurring depression symptoms.  Like any normal teens, most of the time I wanted to have fun and make fun with my family and friends to the point of irritating them at times, the term in Tagalog is "makulit".  They have known me as always having a positive mood.  But then, there's another side of me, they rarely catch me if I'm in this horrible feelings of hopelessness and unexplained tearfulness.  I would lock myself at home and shut myself from the outside world because I don't want to burden others with my condition.  I would only casually tell people I trust, and know would understand, of my recurring depression.  I have manage to escape the environment that triggered my intense sadness in past few years. I must say,  I'm better now.  Of course, as we mature and learn how to cope with difficulties some challenges also intensifies.


A Sudden Hit of Confusion.  At times I was convince that I have clinical depression due to the intensity of the symptoms I experience, yet in other times when I'm in a positive mood I seem to accept that it is just a regular phase and I did not felt the need to consult a physician because I always manage to survive my struggles.  One moment, while I was talking to a friend, I uttered "I think I have a mild Bipolar Disorder" and my friend replied "huh? What?".   I just smiled, shrugged and say "If  it is existing" I always knew that I have not encountered the term, yet.
          Occurrences of restless nights and a rapid cycle of mood swings that lasted for weeks is confusing me.  A rollercoaster-like feelings of ups and downs, most of the days with positive feelings that lasts for only matter of hours then back again to having low energy and restlessness.  Makes me really really think that my mood experiences can be in between major and manic depression but not severely enough to fall in the categories of the said afflictions. So I did some research and stumbled the term "Cyclothymia". I felt relieved.


What is Cyclothymia? Cyclothymia is a chronic bipolar disorder consisting of short periods of mild depression and short periods of hypomania(does not include delusions, hallucinations and other psychotic features), separated by short periods of normal mood. Individuals with cyclothymia are never free from symptoms of either depression or hypomania for more than two months at a time. The classification of cyclothymia was changed in the DSM from Personality Disorder to Mood Disorder and it affects 1% of the population.  Though cyclothymia is a mild (to fairly severe) disorder, it is so only relative to the severity of Bipolar I and Bipolar II disorders.  Cyclothymia can completely disrupt the life of an individual and create personal chaos. In their continual oscillation of mood, they never know from one day to the next what to expect. 


This could be it but I still have to make sure and set an appointment with an expert physician.  


       

Tete`-a-tete´ with the Guitar Master

I always wanted to play music instruments.  To name few, I tried learning guitar, piano and banduria.  It is somewhat frustrating because I'm quite bad at it.  But anyway, I now have a new craze - The Uke!   I've visited a guitar store in Cebu and met kuya Ronnie, an expert in guitar making and also happen to be the 3rd Generation owner and designer of Guitar Master store located in Lapu-lapu City.

I was looking for a good quality ukelele that will also fit my budget and apparently a friend, Claufen, endorsed the Guitar Master.  They are exporting the finest quality ukelele to Hawaii and other parts of the world.   Cebu is Known with its world-class quality guitars, and one place that you must not miss to visit in Cebu is their Guitar Factories.

Kuya Ronnie imparts interesting information about the instruments they are selling, not to sell but to share his passion and knowledge, to every clients. I learned from him, the three types of ukelele: 

Soprano- The most popularly owned ukelele.  Soprano is the smallest type and it produces a tinny sound most recognizably associated with ukelele. (This one I want to own)

Concert- Slightly larger than the soprano and usually has 15-20 frets.  It has slightly fuller sound than the soprano, perfect for small gigs.

Tenor- This one is slightly larger than the concert size and typically produces greater volume and tone than the smaller size.  A choice for performing soloists.

Shore It Up! 2011

Another Shore it up! campaign is taking place on September 3-4, 2011, this time in Hundred Islands Alaminos, Pangasinan.  The first National Park in the Philippines.

Shore it up! 2011 is another ocean clean-up project of Metro Pacific Investment Foundation.  Let me share the foundation's message to everyone "We Filipinos love the beach; this is our way of spending the message that, it's time everyone of us do our part.  We have seen the devastation of the recent typhoons, especially after tons of garbage are left when the flood subsided.  We hope everyone realizes what this means.  We should do something; it's time to clean up."

I had the chance to take part of the shore it up! 2010.  That was September 18 and 19, 2010, and it was a great experience.

 Tourism Student Volunteers from San Sebastian College-Recoletos taught local children of Puerto Gallera on how to take care of their environment.  

Divers enjoyed their garbage hunting. 

This time, Shore it up! 2011 will engage in mangrove planting and moving giant clams to protect its bio-diversity.

What is Schizophrenia

Unlike other psychology term it is very rare that we encounter the word schizophrenia, in some research though 1.5% of the population are suffering from it.  As complicated as the word itself schizophrenia remains one of the most mysterious afflictions.  Still, I'll try my best to explain it in a simple, easy to understand manner.  schizophrenia is a combined term in Greek which is schizo- meaning to split and phren- meaning mind so in a literal, we can translate schizophrenia as "the split of mind".  But then this is different from the split personality disorder.  The "split" in schizophrenia stands for a high degree of disorganization of the mind, the discord that is apparent from the perspective of mentally normal individuals.  That disorganization can manifest itself in illogical and highly complex thinking, delusions and even auditory and visual hallucinations. 

Schizophrenia is divided in 5 types, each a bit different from the other.      

1. Paranoid-type schizophrenia is characterized by delusions and auditory hallucinations but relatively normal intellectual functioning and expression of affect. The delusions can often be about being persecuted unfairly or being some other person who is famous. People with paranoid-type schizophrenia can exhibit anger, aloofness, anxiety, and argumentativeness. 
2. Disorganized-type schizophrenia is characterized by speech and behavior that are disorganized or difficult to understand, and flattening or inappropriate emotions. People with disorganized-type schizophrenia may laugh at the changing color of a traffic light or at something not closely related to what they are saying or doing. Their disorganized behavior may disrupt normal activities, such as showering, dressing, and preparing meals.
3. Catatonic-type schizophrenia is characterized by disturbances of movement. People with catatonic-type schizophrenia may keep themselves completely immobile or move all over the place. They may not say anything for hours, or they may repeat anything you say or do senselessly. Either way, the behavior is putting these people at high risk because it impairs their ability to take care of themselves.
4. Undifferentiated-type schizophrenia is characterized by some symptoms seen in all of the above types but not enough of any one of them to define it as another particular type of schizophrenia.
5. Residual-type schizophrenia is characterized by a past history of at least one episode of schizophrenia, but the person currently has no positive symptoms (delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech or behavior). It may represent a transition between a full-blown episode and complete remission, or it may continue for years without any further psychotic episodes.

Furry Tale

It's raining cats and dogs here in Cebu, nothing much to do, just staring to my newest design (Cecile do the sewing) I decided to post it so I'll have at least memoir of it.  I will give these items to a friend I know exactly will be enjoying to have them. A simple messenger bag and a bag charm made from an old furry car seat cover I bought somewhere in Guadalupe few weeks ago.

 A dog is a man's best friend so they say that's why I call this faux furry  messenger bag the "Buddy Bag". Carrying this gives you the feel of carrying a large  furry dog but lighter.  If you're somewhere cold like the mall, the bag is perfectly cuddly and warm.

Day 06 - A picture of a person I'd love to trade places with for a day

I simply adore Audrey Hepburn and I would love to trade places with one of her characters in her movies back in 50's and 60's.  I did actually, back in 2002 woke-up early in Hong Kong one morning, buy bread and coffee and had my "breakfast at Tiffany's" alone, looking through the glasses outside the store and went jewelry window shopping.  hahahah... I had fun.

So much memories kept yet here's not one but two pictures on my recent favorite captured memory of Bantayan Island with these fun kiddos.

 This moment had me laughing so hard! Monique still manages to strike different poses while the rest of us having discomforts from the water splashes (man made).
